One helluva guy

Let me introduce you all to Avok. He is the character I just started playing about 2 weeks ago. Avok  is a Shadar-Kai Avenger, in the service of the Raven Queen. I would call him your A-typical dark brooding emo anti hero, except he’s not.

I mean on the outside he is, he wears dark cloths, and has pale ash white skin but those all come with the Shadar-kai gig. But since I play Avok there is no chance of him being silent or not cracking jokes. I try to play him off as uncaring or selfish but I’m no actor and when some one needs help Avok can’t help but help them, usually after letting them stew for just a bit.

When I was trying to decide on a class and race I really wanted to be something that was relentless and some what reckless, oddly enough the PHB2 is chalked full of classes which fit the bill. It came down to sorcerer barbarian or avenger. Something about the avengers ability to roll twice on each attack really drew me in. I love the consistency of landing attacks.  So once I had a class picked out the race came easy. I wanted a race which fit the reckless disregard of personal safety the avenger class is known for. Shadar-kai are the perfect fit, the thrill seeking nature of the race made for one hell of a story. An avenger who no only goes a bit crazy in battle but almost needs it to feel alive. Avok does not need any more reason to join up with a group of adventurers other than the fact that there will be battle, and lots of it.

I chose the isolating build not because I want to work apart from the group, but because I think it gives lots of opportunities to work in it. I can single out enemies who target the leader or controller and pull them away or to a more advantageous position. Meaning I can either help the group with their targets or go fishing for those who pose the greatest threat to the less defended members of the party. For this I tried to focus on powers with a bit of a controller flavor to them.

My gear sucks I’ll admit that. The campaign in which I play has a house rule of no magic items or weapons higher than 3 levels over the character level. The starting gear was 1 item from each level 1-6. Not the best gear for  7th level play I know but the party kills stuff quickly and I doubt I will be using a level 1 sword much longer. When choosing my gear I try to pick gear with persistent effects, not daily powers. I also like to use gear which works well together. A good example of this would be a badge which lets me charge with out provoking any opportunity attacks, paired with a helm which lets me do extra damage on a charge. I’m not busting on daily powers, but for this character I really had this feeling that he was a non stop hacking machine.

I often feel like there are two directions I take with characters: 1. James Bond – the quintessential “right tool for the right job” kinda guy. Most of the fun toys he had only made one appearance, kinda like daily powers.  2. Bruce Lee – he didn’t need gear, though sometimes some nun-chucks or a staff would help out from time to time, but he just started beating on people until there was no one left to hit. For Avok I went with the latter over the former. I didn’t want to have to stop each round and think about if I wanted to use the daily power from this item or that one. I wanted to land hits and then say “I have this gear so I get this extra bonus or this effect.” On the other hand an assassin I built a while ago was more James Bond with tools and powers to get him in or out of any situation. Much more tactical and surgical in his approach.

Avok is lots of fun for me to play, and I even gave him an cheesy catch phrase. “With out me Havok would just be an H.” Oh and in closing I heard from @thegeekzilla on Twitter today that some people have been making fun of avengers. I better not catch any of them on my site cause that wont fly. We only make fun of bards and seekers round these parts.
