Olympic figure painting

No I guess that won’t ever really make it to the Olympics but one can dream.  So this week I took another step into RPG nerdom. I painted my very first Reaper Mini! It was really fun! I have to admit I had no idea what I was doing, and I still don’t, but a good time was had by all.

I have been using a Drow assassin mini for my Sharda-Kai avenger Avok. He is an Avenger multi class assassin so I felt ok using the assassin fig, the only problem is it has boobs! Avok is not cool with having boobage. That and he uses a full blade far more than he uses cross bow. So I have been looking for a good figure to use in the drows stead but to no avail. That being the case I have decided to buy a Reaper mini paint it and mod it to my liking. I took some pictures and I thought I would share them with the class.

This guy looked about right. the only thing I’m not really down with would be the sword and the dagger, but I’ll get rid of those later and add my own bad ass weapons.

First things first I threw a quick coat of white paint as a primer layer. I would have not known about the primer coat had it not been for my buds on Twitter (see below).

Next I painted the cloak and gloves. I did this right before everyone started telling me to paint the skin first and work out from there. Whoops, my bad on that one, oh well though I was off and running.

Next up came his boots and vest. I really did this guy back asswards according to almost everyone who gave me advice. Chalk that up to things you learn to do the next time around.

His shirt, belt and ground were all I had left to do. I painted some of the contour lines in black, I would later go over that with a very light coat of gray. I was hoping to make them look like accents, but the grey pretty much covered them up completely.

Tada! Ok I admit he is not all that pretty, but I’m proud of my first attempt at painting figures. I want to put a mat coat over the paint to take off some of the shine. No one is going to believe he has a +18 Stealth if he glows like the freaken sun. Oh and I forgot the best part of all.

Since Avok worships the Raven Queen I thought I would throw her symbol on the back of his cloak. Something I’m not going to be able to find in a pre-painted mini. That alone makes the cost and the trouble worth while.

After I clip off his weapons and give him a full blade I’ll post a few more pics of good ol’ Avok here for everyone to enjoy. Now time to thank everyone who was so supportive of my attempt to paint.

To start this off I have to throw out some shout outs; @Steve_the_Dm thanks for suggesting I take pictures of my work. I wouldn’t even be writing this posts if I didn’t have pictures to post with it. Thanks to @JMpress, @WolfSamurai, @krypt0nian, @countingku, @jediknightgirl, @akjak, @Macadosche, @Milambus, @mrpixelcrash, @Plays2much_DnD, @Atrophied, and @impworks for all the help, suggestions and cheering you sent me while I was messing this guy up.
