So you want to join the rewards program eh?

I really think WotC is sitting on a gold mine of opportunity with the DM rewards program. The ability to track DMs and players in their games could provide a wealth of information for them. Tracking not only con and store play but also casual at home games could provide them with solid number on how many people are playing how often, and what. I love the idea of the program and I really hope to see it grow into a tool that will help them create an even better product.

That being said there has been lots of talk recently about the DM rewards program. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the free adventure they just sent everyone. The process of joining the program is not all that easy, but some of us are working to help you get through it and get signed up. Newbie DM did a mini cast dedicated to the subject. Lost of people on twitter are willing to help you navigate the maze that is the DCI/WPN sign up page. I’m going to throw my hat into the ring and write out a step by step guide to getting your ass into the DM rewards program.

Newbie DM actually did a minicast on joining the DM rewards program so if you are an auditory learner or prefer to listen to the directions instead of reading them you should go check out his mini cast here.

Some things you will need to know:

  • You must have a DCI number for this.
  • You will have to take a basic test of DM knowledge. It’s an open book test so it’s not hard, but don’t be mad if you fail you can take it again in 20 or so minutes I believe.
  • To report home games your players must also have DCI numbers, if they don’t you can’t get credit for any of your games.
  • You will need to sign up with the WPN to report your home games.
  1. You must have a DCI number. These can be found in any game store that supports Dungeons and Dragons Encounters or Living Forgotten Realms. If you can’t find a store that has them you can use the official Wizards of the coast store locator. You must sign up for a DCI number in a store or at an event. Thanks DarthKevin
  2. If you have activated your card skip this step if you just got your card go to the activation page. This page will ask you to enter your new DCI number.
  3. Once you have entered your number and clicked the button it will ask you for an activation code. This will be under a silver tab much like a lottery card. Enter that number.
  4. It will then take you to a country and date of birth selection screen. Enter your information and submit it.
  5. The next page will ask for you email address. Click submit and it will take you to a page with information telling you that an email will be sent to you when your account has been created. Once you get that email you must go to the DCI sign in page here.  You might get an email with a password, if you do skip step 6
  6. Enter your DCI number here and hit “Forgot password.” then check your email for your new password.
  7. Once you have your DCI number and password you should sign into the DCI page here. Be sure not to include any dashes or spaces. If you have not activated your account there will be an activation number on the card. It’s under a silver strip that you can scratch off like a lottery card. Use this number as the password.
  8. This *should* bring you to the “Judge Center” with a whole list of options. The third option should be “Exams” Click this one.
  9. This should take you to a page with information about why you should take their tests. At the bottom of the page will be a “Click Here to Get Started” link. Click this.
  10. This* should* bring you to a selection screen with two lists you will need to choose from. The first will be the list of games you can test for. You will want to select “RPGA Dungeons and Dragons”. The second list is languages, select which ever you are most comfortable with.
  11. This *should* bring you to a page which has a link for the “Official DM (Rewards)  test. Click on this.
  12. You will have an allotted amount of time to pass this test. It’s open book so you should have no problem.
  13. Once you pass the test close the window and go back to the judges Center screen again. This time you want to click on the “Personal Information Center” link.
  14. The “personal information” page will have two boxes, one titled “current memberships” and one titled “My links” The memberships box should list DM rewards as one of you have active.
  15. From here you should click on the “personal info” link.
  16. You will need to fill out some information about your self. They will need your home address if they are going to send you anything.
  17. Once you update your password to something you can remember so back in the “my links” box you should click on the “Change my Password” link and go through the password changing process.

You are now signed up for the rewards program but you won’t be able to report your games yet. There are still a few steps you will need to take to get to that point. First Click here to go to the WPN home play information page. You will need to follow the instructions and email the WotC customer service, trust me these guys are on the ball, and then you should be all signed up for the DM rewards program.
