Wizards of the Coast wants to eat your characters!!!1!

Today wizards of the coast announced a new web based character builder to replace their old download and install version. Twitter is going crazy, and when I say crazy I mean people are acting up as they always do. I thought the web based change would make all the people crying for Mac support happy, I was wrong. Not every toy Apple makes is going to be able to use the new character builder and the people of twitter have a new cry. Mobile support! Now these views are not the views of the other writers on this site but they are mine and I’m going to share them.

Yes the new character builder has been built in MS Silverlight. Why? I don’t know but I could venture a guess that MS offered them incentive, training and possibly help with the coding on the project. This can be huge for small companies who want to better their web presence but don’t want to hire an army of web developers and pay them to learn HTML5. I know Apple has decided not to support Silverlight or Flash on the iPad and because of that it means no character builder for the pad users. I blame Steve Jobs not WotC, their options for design should not be limited to one mans desire to control how information is presented and in what medium.

Cloud based character data? Does this mean Wizards of the Coast wants me to give them all my character files? The announcement does mention that exporting your characters will not be available at first but will be supported in the near future. So you will be able export your characters and save them on your HD if you don’t trust WotC with your 15th level Gnome Warlock.

My iPad does not work with the character builder 🙁 It didn’t before so get over it. Perhaps it will in the future but that’s up to Steve Jobs.

I have to have an internet connection to use it? Sadly yes you do. If you don’t have an internet connection how are you reading this?

I have to have an account to use it? Yup, and aside from the demo version from before you always have. Gone are the days that you can game the system by getting a months subscription and then cancel after you have downloaded the character builder. It also means no downloading it for free off pirate websites. If that’s what you did I don’t really fell bad for you also you smell bad.

I know it’s not a perfect solution to every problem people might have but I think it’s a step forward. WotC is working to better their products. Not everyone will be happy with everything they do, and not every problem will be solved with every update and release. In the end the character builder is not Dungeons and Dragons, it’s a tool they offer, and you don’t have to use it; pen and paper has worked for years.

Part idiot. Part old man. All geek. Thadeous can't think of anything interesting about him self right now. Know this though if he could it would be creative and funny as well as thought provoking.
