Monsterology 101: It’s About Time

The title is true, eh? Both in the sense of it’s about time I wrote another installment of this blog and in the sense of it (as in everything) is about time.

I’m learning more and more about the latter definition: I have a newborn daughter, teach at two colleges more than an 1.5 hours apart from each other, am working on two freelance projects, trying to be a husband/father . . .

Look, I don’t have to tell you that life is busy. You know. We all know it’s about time.

With that in mind, I am offering this little blog both as a tongue-in-cheek tip of the hat to almighty TIME, and to punch out something short and sweet – to get my feet wet blogging again, if you will.

So, as the new Monster Vault sits upon my desk in all of its glory, my mind looks back upon the MM 1. How many monsters did not make the cut.

The phane is one.

You remember it, right? One of those cool abomination beasts. It had the implicit story that it had control over time to some extent. You believed this until you read the stat block. Then you skipped over the monster . . . and you never thought of it again.

Well, in honor of the recent Monster Vault release, in honor of that harsh mistress time, allow me to present the new & improved Phane:

Next week we will work on flavor text and what it means for your monsters when they are played at the table.

Until then.
