Ritualistically Speaking: It’s in the Cards

Cards have become a very large part of some role playing games, Dungeons and Dragons in particular. Some people are up in arms about the idea that D&D is becoming a card based game, but many others have fully embraced the options that cards have opened up to the game. There is a third group that really does not feel strongly either way. For the most part I find my self in the third category. If a card does something really special for me or makes part of the game really sing I will embrace it wholly, if they are a gimmick or just extra stuff to deal with I try to avoid them.

This last week I came across a use for cards that I thought was particularly useful and a bit of a game changer for me. As most people who have been following this site for a while will know; I love rituals and the possibilities they add to a campaign. I really do feel like they have not been done the justice they deserve; the step child of 4th edition if you will. But I have been introduced to something that might change that for some players.

Last week in my Tuesday game the Dungeon Master actually printed a few rituals on cards and gave them out in the treasure parcel. He used Magic Set Editor 2 to create them and gave them some really fun art. Suddenly rituals were not a random list of names on the character sheet but actually felt more like powers. I really wish I had thought of this, I really can’t believe I didn’t a long time ago. It’s odd that putting a ritual on a card makes it feel more viable in a game but really most players in my Tuesday game seem more prone to use them now that they have them in a little stack with a quick description written out. No more stopping the game to look something up, or having to dig though the character builder while the game goes on around you.

Anyone who is remotely interested in using rituals in their game might want to give this a try. The Magic Set Editor 2 is really easy to use and shouldn’t take all that long. I might actually sit down for a while and stat out a few rituals and put them up for download. As long as Wizards of the Coast does not mind I’ll have them in the download section for anyone who wants them.

Part idiot. Part old man. All geek. Thadeous can't think of anything interesting about him self right now. Know this though if he could it would be creative and funny as well as thought provoking.
