Achievement Unlocked!

About a month ago on a whim (back when I was posting D&D things on my mainly webcomicky site), I scribbled out a few graphics for possible achievements in D&D. Actually, they were merit badges, meant to be handed out for outstanding achievements in the respective field of excellence.

The graphics were hastily drawn and, to be honest, mostly filler, but while the post itself drew no comments, I got a slew of support from twitter, facebook, and google+. Seems like people really enjoyed the idea, so I started looking into a way to make it more dynamic. What if they were achievements more in the video game sense of the word? What if, at certain milestones, the player who reached it first was granted some kind of boon?

I liked the sound of that. Ok, yes, it’s also totally cheesetastic, but hey, I’m not the first cheesemonger to ever play D&D. So I came up with a short list of possible achievements (far shorter than the sheet of merit badges I had scribbled before):

CRITACULAR (first character to crit 10x) Once a day, you crit on a 15-20. You must declare your use of this boon before you roll.

DODGE (first character to use acrobatics to get out of the way) Once a day, +10 to reflex defense

MINION SMASHER (first character to knock down 30 minions) Once a day, automatically successfully intimidate all minions on the table.

MONSTER HUNTER (first character to put down 20 of monster type [________]) Once a day, +10 to attack monster with type [_____]

HEAVY LIFTING (First character to make 10 strength/atheletics checks to lift / move objects) Once a day, +5 (+10 paragon, +15 epic) to a strength / athletics check

MASTER LOCKPICKER (first character to pick 10 locks) Once a day, +5 (+10 paragon, +15 epic) to a thievery check to pick a lock.

VILLAINY (first character to complete and evil act–as defined by the DM) Once a day, +5 (+10 paragon, +15 epic) to an intimidate check

HEROICS (first character to perform a random act of kindness–as definied by the DM) Once a day, +5 (+10 paragon, +15 epic) to a diplomacy check

ANIMAL FRIEND (first character to befriend an animal) Once a day, +5 (+10 paragon, +15 epic) to a nature check to handle animals

MEDIC (first character to administer first aid during an encounter) Once a day, +5 (+10 paragon, +15 epic) to complete a heal check under duress

DIPLOMANCER (first character to defuse a violent situation using powers of persuasion) Once a day, negate the penalty to a diplomacy check.

I threw together a quickie 3×5 card to use with these, and also so I could invent any others I liked on the fly. It’s a simple design, but a great tool to keep handy when something at the table inspires you.

So, for example, that first power CRITACULAR ends up looking like this:

What do you think? Too broken? Too cheesetastic? Just right for an extra kick of reward in-game? What achievements would you like to see?
